BOOB TUBE: A BRIEF HISTORY

Could you imagine what great grand pa and granny would say if they see your five-year old kid brushing elbows with dad to compete with what’s up on TV for the day? To dad, it’s either the Big News or the Sports. If it is with mom the child is middling with, he is quite at a loosing end, for it is not that easy to contest mother’s daily bouts with Lifestyle, Italian Molto Mario’s cooking recipe regiments that make mouth water, and other scheduled pageants on beauty queen entitlements. However, to the five-year old junior, it’s, what’s up on Disney, Cartoon Network, or Nickelodeon, and many other TV shows that are popular to children from four to nine years old.

Well, things are rather incredibly ironic in looking back just a few years, in our own time that we experienced watching television thru our select-rotating channeling screen of black and white TV sets of the 50s down to the 70s. Those were days when, we ourselves were either kiddes, teenagers, in our twenties, or in the middle age, but wherever stage bracket we fall at the time, we are apt to remember very vividly when Miss Universe of l969, or before her time won the title in Long Beach California, U.S.A.; or, when the first human, Neil Armstrong and his companions landed on the moon decades ago. Nobody will forget great tragedies in the lives of world prominent leaders like the assassination of John F. Kennedy; that death sealed with one of the most famous parting kiss by wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, depicting exemplary woman’s courage in the face of unexpected momentous twist of faith, from pedestal to utter dismay. Such events we watched from earlier TV sets are very nostalgic that moved or rocked the world, touching each and everyone’s psyche that leaves permanent imprints in our being for as long as we exist.

Each country represented by peoples who are in their better position to reminisce what they watched thru the traditional TV sets may harbor from what messages their local TV programs had left them; then, to relive in their minds, and to relate later to their children. Some local relevant entertainments, or government TV programs become part of the countries’ culture, and its adaptability to the citizens’ teaching and learning process. It is instilled and stored forever in their national archives to be used on research for future generations. Such is the importance of the Audio-Visual technologies that at present is at its highlights in breakthrough.

Television as Part of Communications Technology:

The very first move to develop a gradual resemblance of what we call now a television set was done by a German, Paul G. Nipkow. In 1884, he invented a rotating-disc technology used to transmit pictures over wire, named the Nipkow disc, the first electro-mechanical TV scanning system; which later was abandoned in favor of the more relevant electronic systems.

German scientist Karl Braun in 1897 invented the electronic television based on the cathode ray tube oscilloscope that is found in modern-day television sets.

Vladimir Kosma Zworykin developed a cathode ray tube called the kinescope used for TV transmission in 1929. He then invented the iconoscope, an early television camera.

Who would ever think that a very young teenager, Philo T. Farnsworth conceived the operating principles of the electronic television set?

The Mechanical Television was invented in England in 1920 by John Logie Baird; but later was discontinued. During the World War II, he invented, the first color picture tube. If England attributed the mechanical television to Baird, North America enjoyed similar situation having the same television set, developed by Charles Francis Jenkins in 1923.

Later innovations on the inventions, effectiveness, on proper use of each feature and accessories to the fully developed colored television sets everybody is enjoying today, passed thru many series of claims, on whom we owe tributes on patent. The essence is, all inventors in whose skill and hands the core in television technology were contributory to advancement are all that matters to man’s genre.

Today, we are at its peak in this breakthrough, transforming the entire world into one centralized global community where each one adept to any novelty or techniques enjoy the benefits and advantages in the modern-day big leap in audio-visual communications. Subsequently, will follow other series of technology advancements that will be written in my other related articles.
